This loop combines two icons of the Trentino Dolomites: the Baita Segantini, with its postcard view of the Cimon della Pala, and Val Venegia, one of the greenest and most photographed valleys in the Paneveggio Nature Park.

It is a scenic route of moderate length with no technical difficulties, ideal for families and landscape photographers.

How to get therePasso Rolle / Baita Segantini (2.170 m)

The loop revolves around the Baita Segantini, at 2,170 m, a superb balcony over the Pale di San Martino reached from Passo Rolle, above San Martino di Castrozza. From the pass, at about 1,980 m, a gravel road climbs to the hut, but in summer car access is often regulated by timed slots or replaced by a shuttle, to be checked before setting off. Alternatively, you can walk up from Passo Rolle, or park at the head of Val Venegia, at Pian dei Casoni, and walk up the valley of the dairies. It is worth arriving early: the Baita Segantini and its little lake are among the most photographed subjects in Trentino.

The trailhead is in the San Martino di Castrozza area. Check the travel guide for lift schedules, parking and access rules.

When to go & weather

The best period runs from June to October, with the dairies of Val Venegia in operation and the pastures at their greenest. In summer the valley is a succession of lush meadows and gives you the classic view of the Cimon della Pala reflected in the hut's little lake at dawn. Between late September and mid-October the larch foliage arrives, setting one of the loveliest valleys of the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Nature Park aglow with gold. It is an easy (E) but substantial loop, around 10-14 km depending on the variant: choose a settled day and set off early, above all for the light.
