Gli altopiani di Fanes sopra San Vigilio di Marebbe

San Vigilio di Marebbe, known in Ladin as Al Plan, is a Val Badia resort at around 1,200 metres that has managed to preserve an authentic and unhurried atmosphere. Ladin is still spoken every day, traditional crafts and customs endure, and the village maintains a human scale that stands well apart from the noisier end of Dolomite tourism. It rewards those who are looking for the genuine mountain experience, without extras.

Its great asset is location: San Vigilio is the southern gateway to the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park — over 25,000 hectares of Dolomite rock faces, karst plateaux, and alpine lakes, one of the wildest and most poetically beautiful environments in the entire Dolomites. Trails lead from here to the Fanes plateau and its lakes, to the Ciastlins waterfalls along the evocative water trail, and to the long high-altitude routes deep into the heart of the park.

The Fanes plateau is also the heartland of Ladin legend. This is where the myth of the Kingdom of the Fanes is set — one of the most important sagas in the Dolomite oral tradition, peopled with princesses, marmots, and vanished peoples. The thematic Legends of Fanes trail leads visitors through this intertwining of pristine nature and mythological heritage. In winter, meanwhile, San Vigilio connects to the extensive Plan de Corones ski area, with its wide slopes and solid cross-country skiing tradition.
