Instantly recognisable by its red roof, at the foot of the Denti di Terrarossa.

Rifugio Alpe di Tires — in German, Tierser Alpl — stands at 2,440 metres at Passo di Tires, at the foot of the Denti di Terrarossa, in a panoramic position between the Alpe di Siusi and the Catinaccio Group, inside the Sciliar Nature Park. It is unmistakable for its characteristic ruby-red roof, which has become a small symbol of this part of the Dolomites and a much-loved subject for photographers. Its history is recent and tied to the Aichner family: Maximilian Aichner decided to build it in the post-war years, and work was carried out between 1957 and 1963. Its position makes it a key junction along the trails connecting the Alpe di Siusi with the Catinaccio.

It is reached on foot from the Alpe di Siusi along scenic trails of varying length, or by arriving from the Catinaccio area during group traverses. The kitchen serves typical South Tyrolean dishes, greatly appreciated by hikers after a walk at altitude. With around seventy beds distributed between rooms and dormitories with showers, the hut is very much in demand for overnight stays during traverses linking the Sciliar, Alpe di Siusi and Catinaccio. Staying here allows you to break up the long itineraries of the group in a high-mountain setting with a spectacular view of the Denti di Terrarossa.
