The Laghetto di Fie (Völser Weiher) is a small natural lake sitting at around 1,050 metres, at the foot of the Sciliar amid meadows and woodland. It is shallow — no more than three and a half metres deep — and in summer it becomes one of the cleanest bathing lakes in Italy, with wooden jetties for sunbathing, daily water-quality checks and rowing boats for hire. In winter it freezes and turns into a natural ice-skating rink: a tranquil spot, away from the crowds, where the peaks mirror themselves on the water.
All around, the basin of Fie allo Sciliar preserves a rural atmosphere and several notable aristocratic landmarks. The most famous is Castel Presule (Schloss Prösels), the ancestral seat of the lords of Fie and one of the best-preserved castles in South Tyrol: the current structure was completed in 1517 and is open today for guided tours and cultural events. The combination of water, meadows and castle makes this area a destination that weaves nature and history together without overtaxing anyone's legs.
