Val di Fiemme is one of the world capitals of Nordic skiing: the Passo Lavazè basin offers easy, panoramic loops through the forest at the foot of the Latemar.
It is the ideal destination for those wishing to learn or practise cross-country skiing in a relaxed setting, with well-groomed tracks for both classic and skating technique.
How to get there — Passo Lavazè (1.805 m)
The loop starts from Passo Lavazè, at about 1,808 m, the pass linking Val di Fiemme to Val d'Ega between Varena and Nova Levante. Arrive by car from Cavalese and Val di Fiemme, or from the South Tyrol side, with large car parks near the cross-country centre. In winter the area is also served by the ski-buses linking the resorts of Val di Fiemme. At the pass you find equipment hire, the ski school and refreshment points, all close at hand for organising your day on the tracks.
The trailhead is in the Val di Fiemme area. Check the travel guide for lift schedules, parking and access rules.

When to go & weather
The cross-country season runs from December to March, depending on snow cover, with conditions often excellent thanks to the altitude and the aspect of the basin; part of the loops is covered by artificial snowmaking, which helps in lean years. Midwinter, between January and February, guarantees packed snow and tracks prepared for both classic and skating technique. Clear, cold days give the wax that holds and the sharpest view of the Latemar and the Corno Bianco, while after snowfalls it is worth waiting for the grooming. As the loops are mostly easy, the Lavazè copes well even with weekend numbers.

- Aim for clear, cold days: better snow and the Latemar in the foreground
- After snowfalls, wait for the grooming to find the tracks in ideal condition
- Start with the easier, shorter loops, then go longer: the area offers them for kilometres
