The Cascate di Fanes are a double waterfall plunging into a narrow gorge, reached by a short but dramatic walk along the stream.
The route, partly equipped with boardwalks, is suitable for families with reasonably fit children.
How to get there — Ponte Outo / strada di Fanes (1.330 m)
The Fanes waterfalls are reached by heading up Val dai Tamersc from San Vigilio di Marebbe, along the toll road that leads towards Rifugio Pederü. The most convenient start point is the Ponte Outo area, whose name in Ladin means precisely "high bridge", where there are a few parking spaces, regulated in the busier periods. From here the trail sets off up the stream along the gorge, partly equipped with boardwalks and ladders. As this is a valley inside the nature park, it is worth checking in advance for any traffic restrictions in the summer months.
The trailhead is in the San Vigilio di Marebbe e Fanes area. Check the travel guide for lift schedules, parking and access rules.

When to go & weather
The good period runs from May to October, when the trail is clear of snow and ice and the stream is in generous flow. Late spring, with the thaw under way, gives the most powerful and thunderous waterfalls. Summer is the busiest season, while autumn colours the gorge in warm tones and brings fewer people. After heavy rain the boardwalks and rock become slippery, so it is best to choose settled days and proceed carefully on the equipped sections.
Recommended gear
- Trekking boots or shoes with good grip, because the boardwalks often stay damp
- A waterproof jacket or shell, since the spray from the falls wets the trail
- Water and a snack, especially if walking with children
- Optional poles, handy on the sections with ladders and uneven ground
- A camera protected from the spray to capture the waterfalls
Useful tips
- Tackle the boardwalks and ladders with care, particularly where the spray keeps the wood and rock permanently wet
- Go after the thaw or following a rainy spell, when the falls are at their fullest
- With children, choose a dry day and keep them close on the equipped sections
- Bring a light jacket even in summer, because the air in the gorge stays cool and damp
- If you have time and energy, extend towards the Sbarco de Fanes to lengthen the walk into the valley
