A mountain hut in the heart of the Sella massif, at the top of the Tridentina via ferrata.
Rifugio Cavazza al Pisciadù sits at 2,585 metres in a rocky cirque in the Sella Group, overlooking a small alpine lake of crystal-clear water. It is best known as the endpoint of the Ferrata Brigata Tridentina, one of the most popular via ferratas in the Dolomites: laid out in 1960 by guide Germano Kostner with the help of alpine troops, it was later completed with the iconic suspension bridge that makes it unmistakable. The surrounding environment is stern and majestic — vertical walls, towers and the broad high-altitude plateaux typical of the Sella. The hut, owned by the CAI Bologna section, is also a key staging post for those traversing the entire massif.
The most popular approach is the Tridentina itself, which climbs from the Passo Gardena area to the hut; those who prefer to avoid the equipped sections can take an alternative hiking trail, longer and more demanding. After the effort of the ferrata, the mountain cooking at the Pisciadù is a welcome reward, and the roughly fifty beds make it an ideal base for planning Sella traverses in the days that follow. The atmosphere is the quiet, authentic one of high-altitude huts, far removed from the large tourist crowds that fill the passes below.
