South Tyrol's Christmas markets light up the squares of Bolzano, Bressanone, Brunico, San Candido and Vipiteno. Lights, crafts, mulled wine and the scent of sweets among the mountains.

South Tyrol's Christmas markets are among the most famous in the Alps. The historic squares fill up with wooden huts offering crafts, decorations, typical products and street food.

Each town has its own character. Bolzano is the largest market in Piazza Walther, Bressanone brings Piazza del Duomo to life, Vipiteno gathers under the Torre delle Dodici, while Brunico and San Candido offer a cosier feel.

Between one stall and the next there is no shortage of mulled wine, chestnuts, strudel and biscuits. Many markets also offer music, nativity scenes and events for children throughout Advent.

Good to know

  • Admission: Entry to the markets is free. You only pay for what you buy at the stalls, from crafts and decorations to street food, mulled wine and typical sweets.
  • The five towns are linked to each other by South Tyrol trains, handy for visiting several markets without worrying about parking.
  • Weekends in December are very busy. For a quieter atmosphere, choose weekdays or the early morning hours.
  • Opening times and dates may vary from town to town. Check the official sites, for example christkindlmarkt.it and suedtirol.info, before you set off.
