The hike to the Rifugi del Vajolet leads into one of the most spectacular settings in the Dolomites, at the foot of the celebrated Torri del Vajolet in the Catinaccio massif.

It is a demanding route in terms of elevation gain and terrain, suited to experienced hikers. From the hut it is possible to continue up to Rifugio Re Alberto and Passo Santner.

How to get thereGardeccia (1.949 m)

The hike is based at Gardeccia, at 1,949 m, in the heart of the Catinaccio above Val di Fassa. Drive to Pera di Fassa or Vigo di Fassa, from where the lifts carry you up towards Ciampedie and the Pian Pecei area; from there Gardeccia is reached on foot in about 40 minutes. The old shuttle on the road to Gardeccia is no longer available as it once was, so the most convenient combination is lifts plus a short walk. It is worth checking the current year's cable-car timetables and operating arrangements, as they change from season to season.

The trailhead is in the Val di Fassa area. Check the travel guide for lift schedules, parking and access rules.

Stage by stage

1. From Gardeccia to Rifugio Vajolet

Ascend the Vajolet valley on a well-marked trail to Rifugio Vajolet and the nearby Rifugio Preuss.

2. Towards the Towers

Those who wish to continue press on along a steep path towards Rifugio Re Alberto, directly beneath the vertical Torri del Vajolet.

When to go & weather

The right period runs from late June to September, with the huts open and the climb clear of snow. July and August offer the most settled conditions but also the greatest numbers of walkers heading for the Torri del Vajolet. September is perfect for those seeking cooler air and fewer people, but the days shorten and the early-morning cold can already bite at altitude. This is a demanding route (EE) with around 700 m of elevation gain from the start to the Towers: set off early, so you have time for the upper section and a margin against the afternoon weather.

Recommended gear

  • Trekking boots with a well-cut sole for the climb on trail 546
  • Trekking poles, invaluable on the steep stretches up and down
  • Windproof jacket and a warm layer for the altitude of the Vajolet
  • Waterproofs and plenty of water for the whole day
  • Sunglasses, hat and sun cream

Useful tips

  • From Gardeccia follow trail 546, a firm climb but on a wide, well-kept track, up to the Preuss and Vajolet huts
  • From the Vajolet, consider the steep climb to Rifugio Re Alberto (2,621 m) below the Towers only if you have the legs and the time
  • The section towards the Towers has a few exposed passages with cables: no via ferrata kit is needed, but eyes open
  • Plan your return around the last lifts down from Ciampedie or Vigo
  • Use the Vajolet and Preuss huts for a break before tackling the upper section
  • Not advised with young children: beyond Gardeccia the climb is strenuous and exposed in places
