Ancient village of the Primiero at the foot of the Pale, with rustic houses, wooden hay barns and the church of Sant'Andrea.
A short history
Siror sits at 744 metres, just above Fiera di Primiero, on the sunny side of the basin. It is one of the oldest villages of the Primiero and for a long time it was the municipality that also included San Martino di Castrozza, higher up towards the Pale.
The village keeps the look of an old farming settlement. Stone and wood houses crowd along narrow streets, with the tabià, the wooden hay barns darkened by time, and the balconies where hay and maize were once dried. At its centre stands the church of Sant'Andrea, whose bell tower is visible from afar.
For centuries Siror lived off farming, herding and forestry, like the whole valley. With the growth of San Martino di Castrozza as a resort, the village became a quiet base, away from the bustle yet a few minutes from the slopes and trails of the Pale di San Martino.
Siror has a strong food identity. From here comes the carne fumada di Siror, spiced and smoked beef left to rest for over a month and listed in the Atlas of Traditional Products of Trentino. Also local are the lucanica cauriota, a pork sausage eaten fresh or smoked, and the Tosèla, the fresh cheese of the Primiero that takes its name from the trimming of the curd's edges. A local legend credits the valley's cheesemaking to the Mazzaròl, a woodland sprite.
In 2016 Siror lost its municipal autonomy: together with Fiera di Primiero, Tonadico and Transacqua it formed the new municipality of Primiero San Martino di Castrozza. The Comitato Tradizione e Cultura of Siror still helps organise the Gran Festa del Desmontegar, the autumn festival that celebrates the return of the herds from the alpine pastures with decorated carts and local produce.
