Ski Mountaineering at Col de Locia: skinning in Alta Badia
A ski touring route for advanced beginners: a climb on open slopes and a descent in fresh snow. You need experience.
Experienced hikers (EE)
Ski touring routes for every level, with advice on safety, gear and reading avalanche risk.
Ski touring pairs the effort of climbing on skins with the freedom of an off-piste descent, on slopes and couloirs that look different after every snowfall. We've gathered the routes by level, from easygoing outings for beginners to the more technical climbs for skiers who've put in the seasons.
A good first tour is the climb to Col de Locia in Alta Badia. The elevation gain is modest and the setting is hard to beat. For each route we note the elevation gain, the aspect and how committing it is. This is uncontrolled terrain. Go only with a transceiver, shovel and probe, read the avalanche bulletin, and if you're new to it, hire a mountain guide.
