Passo Falzarego (the Falzarego Pass) sits at 2,105 m, the figure on the Veneto Strade sign at the top, on regional road 48, the Dolomites road. On one side you drop towards Cortina d'Ampezzo, on the other towards Pieve di Livinallongo and Arabba. The cliffs of the Piccolo Lagazuoi rise more than 600 m above the car park, and the Sass de Stria stands opposite. From the junction on the pass, provincial road 24 leads to the Passo Valparola and on into the Val Badia, to San Cassiano and the rest of Alta Badia.
Veneto Strade, which runs the road, treats the 9.5 km between Cernadoi, on the climb from Arabba, and the top as the pass section. You can drive the Falzarego in winter too: in the Veneto Strade bulletins of 8 December 2024, 28 January 2025 and 19 February 2026 it was listed as open, while on 19 February 2026 the Fedaia was closed. Like the other passes between Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige, though, it can be closed without warning when the weather turns, and from 15 November to 15 April you need winter tyres or snow chains on board.
The Lagazuoi cable car leaves from the car park and climbs from 2,105 to 2,732 m in 2 minutes 50 seconds. Fifty metres from the top station is Rifugio Lagazuoi, at 2,752 m. In summer 2026 the cable car runs from 6 June to 18 October, every 15 minutes: first run at 9:00, last ride up at 4:40 pm, last ride down at 5:00 pm. The cable car car park is free for the whole 2026 summer season, and the operator says the cable car, the hut, the exhibition rooms and the path to the summit can all be done with a pushchair or in a wheelchair.
Between 1915 and 1917 the area around the pass was no man's land between the Italian and Austro-Hungarian front lines, and on 5 July 1915 the first Italian attacks on the Austro-Hungarian barrier at the Valparola set off from here. On the pass there is a memorial to that war and the small Chapel of the Visitation, built in 1958. On the Lagazuoi, trenches, communication trenches and tunnels make up an open-air museum. You walk down the Anticima tunnel in under an hour; it is a route for experienced hikers (EE), and the operator recommends boots, gloves, a torch and a helmet.
On foot, trail 424 takes you 2 km from the Falzarego to the Passo Valparola, past the Forte Tre Sassi museum and Lake Valparola. By bus you can get here from Cortina and, on the South Tyrol side, on line 465, which links Corvara, La Villa and San Cassiano with the Falzarego Pass.
